Currently, insurance reform legislation is pending in the Calironir Legislature. Senate Bill 1563 would require health insurance providers to work with the California Department of Health and Human Services and the California Department of Insurance to develop "adequate" insurance coverage for persons with pervasive developmental disorders (such as autism) by October 2009.
As of July 2008, the bill has survived vots in both Assembly and Senate committes with near unanimous votes. The bill is vague on what it will mandate the insurance companies to provide. However, it is a start in the right direction.
